The organisers of the annual fashion and music event Music Meets Runway (MMR), Le Reve Events have announced that this year’s MMR will be an ‘African Edition’ with participation from different African countries.
The MMR brand has continued to raise the bar in the entertainment industry and it is no surprise that news of its’ success has spread to other African countries such as South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania just to name a few. As such, this year’s show has been appropriately themed ‘The African Edition’.
This year, MMR Africa aims to spotlight excellence in arts and craftsmanship by celebrating the diversity of African artisans and showcasing various unique and authentic creations from trailblazers in the African society today. MMR 2014 promises to be an experience like no other, putting the best of African music and fashion together on one stage in Lagos, Nigeria.
Music Meets Runway is an annual event recognised for providing a platform for the most creative designers, to showcase their latest collections accompanied by live performances from popular musical acts.
Following in the tradition of MMR, the organiser through its foundation, MMR Foundation will identify a talent through the competition MMR Rising Icon which is sponsored by Sovereign Trust Insurance. The winner will be supported with: a cash prize to help launch career in fashion, an extensive mentorship programme, a feature in the MMR Magazine, showcase a full collection at Music Meets Runway 2015 and become a MMR Brand Ambassador.
“We are able to leverage our love for fashion and music to provide opportunities for philanthropic growth” said Jennifer Olize, Founder of Music Meets Runway.
MMR 2014, which was recently endorsed by the Ministry of Tourism, will promote tourism in Nigeria by bringing Africa to Nigeria.
“The vision of MMR Africa is to show the world these amazing talents, cultural diversity and innovative potential of the creative artisans who have attained international standards right here in Africa” said Olize.
The six designers who will showcase alongside some of the best artists in the African music industry are:
KikoRomeo (Kenya): KikoRomeo was founded by Ann McCreath in Kenya in 1996. Mademoiselle Aglaia (Nigeria): Mariam Afolabi, founder and creative director of fashion label Mademoiselle Aglaia, which debuted in 2009; Sunny Rose (Nigeria) founded by designer Maureen Ikem Okogwu-Ikokwu, a self-taught designer; Osei Duro (Ghana): founded by two designers, Molly Keogh and Maryanne Mathias, after a research trip to Ghana.
KolaKuddus Couture (Nigeria): Kola Kuddus Yusuf is the Founder and Creative Director of KolaKuddus Couture, an Indigenous Nigerian Menswear fashion brand; Neville Masondo (South Africa): Neville Siphiwe Masondo founded his own brand La Art Neviole Emporium in 2012, where he offers timeless unforgettable haute couture high fashion pieces for both classes of male and females.
